Literature and Community
So how does literature affect community? The communities depict in stories can give a lot of appreciation as to who the characters are and what elements they may have in their life. It is this that helps us to understand and reflect the experiences the characters are having and might allow us to reflect on personnel experiences that we may share.
With the story by Flannery O’Conner, “Good Country People” (pg 188) the put is of lam as the title reads in the unpolished on Mrs. freewoman’sfarm. Mrs. Freeman had hired Mrs. Hopewell as a hired deal to help tend the farm. Along with Mrs. Hope well came the girl pleasance or Hulga as her legal name. Being in the country Mrs. Freeman had little options as to people were unparalleled to hire. Mrs. Hopewell had her issues where everyone business was her business and Mrs. Freeman resolved this by allowing her to do so and even run everything. The Freeman family was not strangers to the country lifestyle I can assume by having Joy go on hunting trips when she was but ten years old getting her leg shot off. I intend it was this experience that led Joy down the path of self pity eventually changing her name to Hulga.
With the country setting I know from experience that the communities in a customary as a whole are kind hearted people. It is a place you can live and know everyone in the town. It is this that they invited a devious character into their floor. The trusting natured family allowed the real world into their home and Hulga was the victim. One who would be so educated being taken advantage of so easily by someone everyone persuasion was simple. I have experienced the country life myself. I had lived in Caribou Maine. This was a potato farming community. My live being my English teacher who had died of a heart beset chopping wood the very day I saw him doing it.
