Feminist Theory of Jamaica Kincaids Girl
Are women instantly just educated housewives? Should a womens duty be to cook, clean, nurture and avoid becoming a slut? If you answered no to both of these questions, then you are absolutely right. The short base Girl, written by Caribbean-born author Jamaica Kincaid, is a poem in the form of a set of instructions passed down from give to daughter; a stereotypical approach of how a preteen wo humans should be raised. Although the poem is beautifully written, it is almost all sexist. Reviewing the text from a Feminist Theorists side, Kincaids Girl brings up many unanswered questions and concerns. This piece of belles-lettres mirrors the duties and expectations of a woman living in a male-dominated world. The stories t unity, the chat taken place, and the actions of the mother placed upon the daughter is purely influenced by gender.
One of the many aspects of traditional female stereotyping that was noticed startle was the seemingly long list of chores that the mother created for her daughter. Assuming the boyish girl had a brother, why not he do it those tasks?
The narrators first statement was wash the colour clothes on Monday, then later she states, cook pumpkin fritters in very hot sweet oil (Kincaid 1). parliamentary law seems to place cooking and cleaning in a year labeled womans work, right along with sewing, nurturing, and nursing, amongst other things.Why couldnt a boy be the one receiving these lessons? The narrator elaborates on how to iron the fathers pants, mechanically claiming it as a womans job. However, a man is perfectly capable of ironing his own pants. Giving that province on the woman is very one-sided.
