When we hear the word hard workerry, one may count on of African-Americans being captured from their homeland and taken to the shores of America to do make up for others unwillingly while constantly being beaten and tortured. For the just about part this is true. Clearly, slavery was a most daunting and morose period for African-Americans and still has far reaching impact today. still in, My Bondage and My Freedom, Fredrick Douglas explains that slaves were not the only victims of slavery. Slaves, slave holders, and white non-slaveholders were alto checkher victims of the system of slavery in many different ways.
When commonwealth became slaves, everything that they knew and everything that made them who they were was taken away from them. Identity is something that a psyche gets from their moral teachings, family, heritage, and many other cultural impacts. When African Americans were driving into slavery, all of things they knew and made them who they were, was taken from them. Frederick Douglas makes the case that they were stripped of their identity by the slave owners. The practice of separating children from their mothercruelty and barbarism of the slave system, is an example of how slave holders would strip slaves of their identity (Douglas 24).
