Things Fall Apart

In the novel Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is often taken oer by his strive to rise his masculinity. In the Ibo culture masculinity is shown through a number of things: a mans number of wives, winning wrestling matching, owning yams, and having many titles. Okonkwo was well know for his masculinity through turn up the nine villages and all the same beyond. His fame rested on his solid personal achievements (Achebe 3). Okonkwos masculinity often leads to dispute, and eventually, to his downfall. This can be seen when he crush his wife during the week of quiet, when he beats his son, Nwoye, when he finds out Ikemefuna is leaving, and when he kills himself at the end of the book. Through these acts, he not only creates inner conflict with himself, but also conflict with others.
When violence is not allowed in the clan for just 1 week, Okonkwo manages to beat his wife for his own selfish reasons. In the Ibo culture, the calendar week of Peace is a time for everyone to get along, in trea trusted to the earth goddess, Ani, in hopes for a good yam appease through out the village.
