This first chapter explained a lot ab out(a) the study of psychology. It cover a lot of beas and clarified many different opinions. It started out explaining what psychology was and how in fact it is a recognition despite what people usually think. Psychology is the scientific study of the header, brain, and behavior. The earmark withal explained why psychology was such a problematic subject because human behavior is hard to predict, psychological influences are rarely independent of each other, people differ in thinking, people often influence each other, and culture shapes peoples behavior. At first it was hard to dissever psychology from philosophy. The five major theoretical perspectives were: structuralism, behaviorism, psychoanalysis, functionalism, and cognitivism. Structuralism aimed to disclose the basic elements. Functionalism strove to understand the adaptive purposes.



Behaviorism concentrate on uncovering the general principles of learning underlying human and wildcat behavior. Cognitivism examines the relation between the brain functioning and thinking. Psychoanalysis focuse on internal psychological processes. At the end of chapter 1 we also learn of psychological scientists distinguish the difference between basic question and applied research. Basic research examines how the mind works, whereas applied research examines how we can use basic research to solve real-world problems.
