The Scopes Trial took place in Dayton, Tennessee and put John T. Scopes on trial, for teaching evolutionism in his classroom, and he was said to have break the Butler Act, which made it outlawed to teach evolutionism. He was defended by lawyer Clarence Darrow, who himself was agnostic and became a favorable civil libertarian, spot the fundamentalists had William Jennings Bryan defending their argument, to abolish evolutionism.

Bryan served in the United States Congress as a Representative for Nebraska, and became repository of State under prexy Woodrow Wilson.
