Richie leaves Harlem to join the United States Army in Vietnam, Leaving his pay back and younger brother Kenney behind. After his basic training for Vietnam he begins to create his own ideas about the struggle and that his previous knee injury from playing high school basketball go away keep him out of combat. When he arrives he apace do friends with Peewee and Jenkins who were other recruits in his squad stationed in Chu Lai. Jenkins was quickly killed after the squads first patrol by a land mine. After hearing that and witnessing other deaths and brutalities Richie starts to head that has of all time going to make it home. He uses his time to gauge and figure out not only about the war but also himself, as to why hes in Vietnam in the first place. Richie tries to communicate his thoughts and fear to his bewilder by writing her about what hes sightedness and going through but he is unable to articulate her the truth knowing that no one will ever understand his emotions with seeing the effects of combat first hand.



Richie later becomes injured in battle and sent to a hospital for a few weeks to recover. During his recovery he considers leave the armament but he was ordered to re-join. Back with his unit and their naked leader, Corporal Brunner, who leads the men on a gonely rush along the river. After a series of mistakes firefight breaks out leaving Richie and Peewee wounded. Their wounds were serious enough to earn a throw off from the army. Peewee and Richie fly home on the same categorical back to Fort Ord, California along with many caskets of dead soldiers.
