Scout goes through a tremendous nitty-gritty of growing up in the novel - physically, emotionally, mentally, and morally. Scout learns just about the real world via contact with the outside world, such as at school and the trial of Tom Robinson, a Negro wrongly accused of raping a white girl. Tom Robinsons trial provides insight into the unfairness, injustice and cruelty of the adult world. This results in a certain loss of innocence and coming of age for Scouts character. Her moral education is also explored as the idea of how children be educated and taught to move from innocence to maturity is presented.

The moral voice of To Kill a Mockingbird is body forth by Atticus Finch, who is virtually unique in the novel in that he has experienced and understood evil without losing his credit in the human capacity for goodness. He tries to teach this net moral lesson to his children as part of their education to show them that it is potential to live with conscience without losing hope or becoming cynical. This was highlighted when Scout says I never figured out how Atticus knew I was listening, and it was not until many years later that I realize he unavoidablenessed me to hear every word he said.
